Car troubles

Well, one of the adventures of yesterday was the rental car. We had a full size 7 passenger minivan booked for 9:30 am at Hertz. We arrived, having taken a cab which cheerfully headed off in the wrong direction so it took twice as long as it should have. But, in typical friend,y Irish fashion, the cabbie turned off the meter when he realized his mistake.

No car. Many other smaller, inadequate cars offered, but our car was not there. After intensive cross-examination, the Hertz employee finally admitted that the car would not be ready for "at least an hour, no guarantees". Because it allegedly was still be driven by someone else and it hadn't been returned to the airport yet. But he would give us a manual transmission car for less. Really? Does our luggage fit? Well, no. But it would be cheaper. This went on for about an hour. No answer to the question of what would happen if the car was not actually returned that day.

Then another cab ride back to Thrify, which we could have walked to from the hotel. Thrifty had just assured us by phone that they had a large minivan. True. However, they would not allow us to decline insurance and be covered on our credit card because the car was worth $50000. So we called VISA who confirmed that the limit was $65000. Really? Oh well then, the limit is now 50000 Euros, even though the written material showed to us said dollars and which happens to be slightly more than 65000 dollars. And how much is the insurance. Well, it was 30 Euros a day. But now it's 50. At this point, James called Hertz and, miracle of miracles, the car will be there in 20 minutes. Sara and I head off i yet another taxi to get the car. I went out to look at it and could not stop laughing. Technically, it is a people moving van. However, we think it looks like a Pusateris delivery truck. But off we go, only 3 hours delayed. Sara has done heroic work driving through Dublin and north on the wrong side of the road.

Main events were the Neolithic structures at Newgrange (more photos coming) and Bushmills Inn which is really lovely and dinner was great, including the sticky toffee pudding.
